Body language is one of our ways of communicating — the non-verbal ‘talk’ we all use on a daily basis. It includes our facial expressions, body postures, gestures, breathing, physical movements, eye movement, touch and spatial relationships. Quite a lot of communication without ever speaking a single word. Around 80% of our face-to-face communication is nonverbal.
Most body language is unconscious. We use it right from the time we’re babies. It’s also difficult to lie with our body language, if you know what to look for. The secret is to find clusters of signals, rather than isolate a single gesture or expression. If someone crosses their arms for example, it might mean they’re being defensive or it might mean they’re cold. But if their arms cross at the time you mention something they’re uncomfortable with, and they exhibit other defensive language at the same time, then you are likely to correctly deduce that something is wrong.
Body language is a skill that takes practice to hone. The good news is that you can watch people all the time, and refine your observations.
