How to hire a Private Investigator

If you have your suspicions about something – maybe a cheating partner or troubled teenager – you may be considering hiring a private investigator. Hiring the right detective for the job can be a daunting task, and likely one you’ve never done before. Here at Elite Investigations Sydney/Melbourne, we’ve helped thousands reach the result they need, so here are a few of our tips for hiring a private investigator in Sydney/Melbourne.

1. Know What You’re After

It may seem obvious, but it’s not always so easy to pinpoint exactly the resolution you are after. You may know what your suspicions are, but what is the best way to get the result? Surveillance? Investigation? Let’s say you want to know if your partner or spouse is cheating on you, and you call a Sydney/Melbourne private detective for a quote. You might start to hear about all the different things they can do and be convinced to book some services that you don’t really need.

A good investigator will ask you for lots of information about your case and needs before recommending the best course of action. If someone starts giving you a quote before they know all the facts, look elsewhere!

2. Find a Licenced Private Investigator

Sadly, it’s not always easy to tell if someone is telling the truth about their abilities, therefore your best guarantee that you’re at least getting someone who know what to do is checking for accreditation. To work as a private investigator in Sydney/Melbourne you must be licensed by the Victorian Government. It’s a simple easy check, but it can be easy to forget in the nerves of hiring your first detective in Sydney/Melbourne.

A license tells you that the individual has been checked by the police and they have a clear background. It also guarantees that your  investigator will be able and willing to appear in court, in case it comes to that.

To be 100% sure, ask for their private investigation license number, write it down, then check it with the Licensing & Regulation Division of Victoria Police.

3. Check Their Qualifications & Experience

While a good private investigators will not give you the names of their current clients, their website and google should give you a good idea of how long they’ve been operating. The more established, the more experience they have. Another thing to look for is qualifications. While some investigators will do the bare minimum required to pass as a private detective, others will ensure they are up to date and well trained in all aspects of investigation and surveillance. For example, our director Steve has almost every qualification you can get!

Also, some investigator specialise in just one type of investigation, limiting your avenues for a result. Make sure your investigator has experience in surveillance, background checks, fraud investigation, or anything that might be relevant for your investigation.

4. Take the plunge!

In the end, hiring a private detective is a daunting task, no matter how much research you do. If your investigator seems to understand what you need and checks all the boxes, just trust your instinct and go for it! You deserve to know the truth!
