4 Tell-Tale Arm And Hand Gestures Of Liars—Hands Up You Caught Me!

Hey there, Steve here and welcome to this week’s private eye post where we’ll take a look at some of the arm and hand gestures of liars.

Unless you’re in a relationship with someone who is a sociopath or psychopath, it’s highly unlikely they will feel comfortable when they lie to you. There are many ways you can detect a liar but body language is usually highly reliable when observed in clusters.

And because most people talk to some extent with their hands, you can pick out their lies with surprising accuracy when you know what you’re looking for.

#1 The Arm Cross

The old crossing of the arms. Almost everyone has heard of this as being a defensive body language posture but you really need to observe this with other negative cluster cues for it to be accurate. If your partner moves away when you go closer to him and crosses his arms, it’s a good sign he’s “avoiding” you because he’s uncomfortable with the conversation.

#2 The Back Pat

This is kind of like when you spend a few minutes talking to someone and they reply with just, “OK.” If you go in for an intimate hug and are met with the kind of friendly gesture you’d expect from a sibling or a friend, your significant other might just be hiding something. Especially if this is not their usual behaviour.

#3 Gesture Timing

Lying is stressful to most people and so when cheaters lie they often limit their physical movements. They’re much more rigid when they’re lying. Well, an upshot of this is that when liars do make any kind of gesture it’s after they’ve started talking. People who tell the truth often gesture just before they speak. Liars gesture just after.

#4 The Pocket Protector

A common signal that people are lying is when they hide the palms of their hands. Guys will typically put their hands in their pockets. This signals they’re unhappy with their self-image—their looks, clothes or actions. If their thumb is hooked out of their pocket it means confidence, so their thumb must also be hidden away.

Summary

These 4 lying gestures of the hands and arms are the easiest ones we usually spot when investigating a cheating spouse. They’re highly obvious to the trained eye and are simple to pick up on once you know what to look for.
